AWeber for Columbia Business School Students with Professor Jim Barksdale

This year at Columbia Business School, Marketing 360 is one of our core modules. In a nutshell, Marketing 360 is an initiative aimed at helping MBA students develop the ability to think like a marketer, and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to become high-quality practitioners. This year we are expanding on that offering with a new specialization: AWeber for Columbia Business School Students with Professor Jim Barksdale.

Professor Barksdale is the Director of Marketing at Columbia Business School, and one of the country’s leading authorities on marketing and brand management. He has published widely and is an esteemed practitioner whose work has helped countless students get a leg up on their careers.

The Specialization: AWeber for Columbia Business School Students with Professor Jim Barksdale

If you’ve ever shopped at Amazon, you may know that when you place an order, the merchant typically ships the products within 48 hours, and you can expect to receive your order in 7 to 10 days. Now, imagine for a moment that your Amazon profile is anything like mine. You’ve shopped a lot, and viewed lots of products, but you’ve never really paid much attention to marketing or the brands behind the products you buy. One day, you decide to take the time to learn more, and you set up an account on AWeber. After a quick sign up process, you’re ready to receive emails advertising products that meet your needs and interests. After all, that’s the whole point of setting up a merchant account on AWeber: to get personalized email notifications when products that you’re interested in line up for sale.

The specialization, AWeber for Columbia Business School Students with Professor Jim Barksdale, will challenge you to think about marketing and brands in a whole new way. You’ll start by taking a look at the role of social media in the marketing mix, how to measure the success of your marketing efforts, and the competitive analysis of your chosen industry. You’ll then move to the applied side of the specialization, where you’ll work on a real-life marketing case study, building and presenting a product prototype, and creating a business plan for a new product launch.

What Does the Specialization Teach You?

From the very beginning, we aimed to make Marketing 360 different from the traditional marketing courses at Columbia Business School. One of the major differences is the way we teach you to think. Traditionally, marketing is all about brands and advertising, and that’s okay. You’ll learn a lot about marketing and brand management, and you’ll be able to apply what you learn to real-world problems. However, what you won’t learn is how to think like a marketer, which is exactly what you need to be able to do if you want to be a successful business leader in today’s ever-changing world. To that end, we’ve tried to equip you with the tools to analyze any situation from a marketing perspective, which we know from experience can be incredibly useful in any setting.

Why AWeber?

Why AWeber? Because unlike other email marketing platforms, AWeber actually cares about your business. They want to help you succeed, and that means they’ll go above and beyond what’s required to make that happen. They’ll provide you with the tools you need to grow your business, whether you’re a small business or individual pursuing entrepreneurship. Additionally, AWeber provides a variety of useful and free marketing and customer support tools that can make your life as a marketing professional easier and more enjoyable. If you’re looking for an email marketing platform to help you succeed in business, AWeber is the company to go with.

How Will the Specialization Benefit You?

The main purpose of Marketing 360 is to give you a real-world marketing perspective—one that prioritizes businesses over brands, and customers over companies—and to prepare you for a career in marketing and brand management. In a nutshell, instead of just teaching you the basics of marketing, we want you to understand and apply what you learn to a real-world setting. To that end, we’ve designed the specialization to walk you through the entire marketing process, from identifying the right audience to reach, through designing a marketing campaign, and finally to analyzing the results.

The goal of the specialization is to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to become a high-quality practitioner. You’ll learn how to conduct research, analyze competitors, and make informed decisions using competitive benchmarking and other advanced analytical tools. Additionally, you’ll develop the ability to think creatively, come up with new ideas, and implement them effectively. Ultimately, we want you to come away from the specialization with the skill set needed to manage marketing in any setting, whether you’re a business or an individual.

What’s more is that you’ll learn all of this while having a lot of fun. Our professors and staff are world-class instructors, and we’ve designed the coursework to be both engaging and exciting. We’re a fairly large community on AWeber, so you’ll easily find professors, staffers, and students who are willing to help you succeed, and who are also passionate about marketing.

How Will the Specialization’s Case Study Guide Help?

The case study guide for Marketing 360 is designed to get you ready to apply what you learn. In each chapter, you’ll read a brief summary of the key concepts that you need to know, and then you’ll have the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned. The summary questions at the end of each chapter will help you test your understanding, and the case study at the end of the guide will give you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned.

When Can You Start The Specialization?

The specialization can be started any time after the first week of the Fall semester, and can be completed in about 10 months. However, if you’re serious about getting a top-notch degree at Columbia Business School, you may want to consider taking longer—especially if you’re taking the class in the evening, as many of our students do. To get the most out of your studies, you should take the time to complete all of the assignments, and work through the resources thoroughly. Additionally, if you do want to take longer, you might want to consider looking into merchant accounts with credit cards, as the processing fees are typically lower, and there are no interest payments to be made.
